Lee Rossi hates labels. Although he has lived in California almost all of his adult life, he is not a West Coast poet, not a Beat, nor Buddhist, nor eco-poet, although once in a while you will hear echoes of all three. He is not a formalist, even though on occasion he’ll write a sonnet, a villanelle, a pantoum, a ghazal, a duplex, or even a golden shovel. He is not a poet-activist, although criticism of American politics and culture runs throughout his work. Unlike Whitman, he does not contain multitudes, but only his elusive self, its cacophony of ideas and opinions.
